Holidays often involve lots of food. How do we maintain healthy teeth and gums while still enjoying the goodies of the season? Here are some suggestions.

Get enough calcium: Getting the proper nutrition is an important first step in maintaining a healthy smile! One of the most important nutrients for your mouth is calcium. Many people turn to dairy–milk, yogurt, or a variety of holiday cheeses. If you can’t have dairy, try some calcium rich nondairy foods such as dark leafy greens–try integrating a kale or spinach salad into your holiday dinner. Fortified orange juice is also full of calcium.

Limit Sugars and Acids: Don’t snack on sugary or starchy foods throughout the day. Have a treat of two, then stop for a while. Try chewing a piece of sugar-free gum for 20 minutes to encourage saliva flow to clean teeth.

Keep Up on Oral Hygiene: Make sure you are brushing and flossing every day. Brush should happen twice a day, for 2 minutes each session. Flossing should happen once a day for 2-3 minutes each time.
