Gargle and spit: using mouthwash is easy, right? Think it or not, using mouthwash is a little bit more complex than that. (But once you get the steps down, it really isn’t tough at all.) We’ve put together some instructions to support you in getting the most out of your mouthwash-swishing sessions.

Used properly, mouthwash can be a robust part of any oral hygiene routine. To use mouthwash, pour about 20 ml of the fluid into a cup. Transfer the liquid from the cup into your mouth and swish, gargle, or hold it in your oral cavity for around half of a minute before spitting it out into the sink. Do not wash out the mouthwash with water, and try to refrain from chomping food or drinking for half an hour following your rinsing with mouthwash.

Some people think that rinsing with mouthwash is a shortcut to an entirely clean mouth, but that’s not really the whole story. Even though mouthwash can help you strengthen your dental health, brushing twice per day and flossing once a day are still key habits crucial to any great dental hygiene routine. Don’t ever skip brushing your and flossing your teeth and gums.
